Returns information about a block by number.

Parameters

Parameters are positional, in the order below.

Parameter	Type	Required	Description
Block	Block number or tag	Yes	Block reference for the request.
Hydrated transactions	Boolean	Yes	true returns full transaction objects; false returns hashes.

Return value

A block object, or null if the block is not found.

The returned object includes these fields. Fork-specific fields depend on the selected network and block:

parentHash	32-byte hash	Hash of the parent block.
sha3Uncles	32-byte hash	Hash of the block’s uncle list.
miner	20-byte address	Address receiving the block’s execution-layer fees.
stateRoot	32-byte hash	Root of the state after this block.
transactionsRoot	32-byte hash	Root of the block’s transaction trie.
receiptsRoot	32-byte hash	Root of the block’s receipt trie.
logsBloom	Bloom filter	Bloom filter summarizing log addresses and topics.
difficulty	Hexadecimal quantity	Block difficulty; zero for Ethereum proof-of-stake blocks.
number	Hexadecimal quantity	Block number as a hexadecimal quantity.
gasLimit	Hexadecimal quantity	Maximum execution gas permitted in the block.
gasUsed	Hexadecimal quantity	Execution gas consumed.
timestamp	Hexadecimal quantity	Block timestamp in Unix seconds, encoded in hexadecimal.
extraData	Hexadecimal bytes	Extra data included in the block header.
mixHash	32-byte hash	Consensus-dependent mix digest or randomness value.
nonce	8-byte value	Consensus nonce; zero for Ethereum proof-of-stake blocks.
baseFeePerGas	Hexadecimal quantity	Base fee per unit of gas, where supported by the network.
withdrawalsRoot	32-byte hash	Root of the withdrawals list, where applicable.
blobGasUsed	Hexadecimal quantity	Blob gas consumed, where applicable.
excessBlobGas	Hexadecimal quantity	Excess blob gas used to calculate blob pricing, where applicable.
parentBeaconBlockRoot	32-byte hash	Parent beacon-block root, where applicable.
size	Hexadecimal quantity	Encoded block size in bytes.
transactions	Transaction hashes / Full transactions	Transaction hashes or full objects, according to the request.
withdrawals	Withdrawals	Withdrawals included in the block, where applicable.
uncles	Uncles	Hashes of the uncles included in the block.
requestsHash	32-byte hash	Commitment to execution requests, where applicable.

Direct behavior

Requests for older chain data are automatically routed to providers with full chain history. This covers blocks, transactions, receipts, and logs independently of historical account state.

Requests using latest follow Direct’s reference-block rules. The selected reference is preserved during recovery; separate requests can see a newer reference.

For providers

Support the required recent chain-history service. Advertise full chain history only when all included method families and lookup indexes work back to genesis.
